Introduction of Paragliding

Paragliding is the simplest form of flying and a natural way to get high!
Developed from ram air parachutes by some smart guys, the paraglider is a foot-launched inflatable wing which allows good pilots to fly more than 400 kilometers and climb up to more than 6000 meters.

Easy to launch, control and land, and portable in a rucksack it has something for everyone: ridge soaring for relaxation, adrenaline rushes for addicted pilots, fashion equipment for fussy guys, beauty and freedom for all of us.

But remember: everyone who lives dies; yet not everyone who dies, has lived. We choose flying not to escape life, but to prevent life from escaping us!

Rules of the air:

Remember that gravity is not just a good idea, it's the LAW. AND, it's not subject to repeal!
Every takeoff is optional. Every landing is mandatory!
It's always better to be down here wishing you were up there than to be up there wishing you were down here!
You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck!
Good judgment comes from experience. Unfortunately, the experience usually comes from bad judgment!
Learn from the mistakes of others. You won't live long enough to make all of them yourself!
The air does not know you are an expert. Turbulence is Nature's way of reminding us we are not birds!
You're not a real pilot until you have to hitchhike back to the Landing Zone!
The site working really great today is always at least 100 kilometers away. You should have been here yesterday!
Work is permanent, good flying weather is transitory. Work is for people who don't fly paragliders!

Our instructors are excellent cross-country pilots, proven in competition and in record breaking. Depending on your level of experience they will help you improve your:

Thermalling techniques;
Flight planning and tactics;
Pre-flight and inflight decision making;
Cross-country speed to fly;

Tandem Paragliding
Tandem flying is the easiest way to see and learn more! It is exhilarating for inexperienced people who want to feel the flying fever at least once in a life time, irrespective of age, gender and body weight.

The tandem paraglider has a bigger surface area and is designed for flying with up to 240 kg of load. You sit in a comfortable harness, attached to the paraglider and your instructor who will take care of everything. If you are brave enough you can control the paraglider yourself... or just enjoy the view and take some photos.
Beginner Paragliding Lesson
You are burning with a desire to fly. Paragliding is probably the easiest, cheapest and safest way to fulfill your dreams but some basic training is required.

The main purpose of our beginner's course is to provide the foundation for unsupervised and safe flying. Close contact with your instructor will help you to overcome natural fears of height and motion.

People are different and their progress in paragliding varies but our 6 day training program is flexible and personalized to fit you. Weather is also a key factor for all kinds of aviation but in most cases you should expect the following training program:
Course Itinerary:

Day 1: basic theory of aerodynamics and a paraglider's construction; practice of a Parachute Landing Fall; introduction to paragliding equipment and checks; ground practice of take off, controlling and landing a paraglider; first flights from the training hill.

Day 2: 5-10 top to bottom flights from the training hill: forward launch, learning to control the glider in the air and attempt a landing approach; more theory of aerodynamics and introduction to micrometeorology.

Day 3: 5-10 top to bottom flights from the training hill: forward and/or reverse launch; better control and landings; more theory of aerodynamics and rules of the air.

Day 4: 2-4 flights from the high mountain; instruction in reserve parachute use; first big solo flights: development of your sense of height, speed and distance; practice of turns and landing approaches.

Day 5: 2-4 flights from the high mountain; improving your landing approach and correcting mistakes; introduction to collapses: recognition and recovery; more theory of micrometeorology.

Day 6: 2-4 flights from the high mountain; improving your landing approach, correcting mistakes and adding more elements to active and safe flying.
Course Syllabus:

Climbing the 40 m high training hill with 10 kg equipment for 5-10 times during the first 2-3 training days is inevitable. It's also a good fitness exercise.

The Beginner's course corresponds to the international FAI/ParaPro1, After the successful competition of the course you can obtain the FAI/ParaPro1 license from us after the completion of the beginner's course, pilots can fly confidently from safe sites in easy conditions. Discovering new flying sites and weather conditions can still be dangerous and we recommend that you look for advice from local experienced pilots or instructors.
Next steps are:

To have 30-40 top to bottom preferably high mountain flights in order to build confidence and a basic routine.
Enroll onto the intermediate training course!

Continuing further with the advice of books and fellow pilots is sweet but risky and slow.
Intermediate Paragliding Lesson
It is so easy to start and addict to paragliding but in order to enjoy it long years you should understand it more.

The main purpose of Gin Malaysia intermediate course is to prepare the beginner and inexperienced pilots for independent and safe discovery of new horizons in paragliding. It is also useful for filling up the post beginner's gap of irregular flying due to lack of good weather or free time.

Before starting the course you will make a demo flight from the training hill to direct us for your previous experience and where to focus on your further training.

Depending on weather and your previous knowledge and skills in most cases you should expect the following training program:
Course Itinerary:

Day 1: Active and safe flying: 2-4 solo flights from the high mountain.
Practicing 360° and S-turns. Post flight analyses.

Day 2: 2-4 solo flights from the high mountain. Performing "Big Ears".
Landing on smaller alternative landing places.

Day 3: Collapses: 2-4 solo flights from the high mountain. Simulating
asymmetric and front collapses in the air. Developing skills of active flying in turbulent conditions.

Day 4: Basic maneuvers: wingovers and spirals. 2-4 flights from the high mountain. Aerodynamics and Dynamics of flight.

Day 5: Soaring: 2-4 long flights of thermal or ridge soaring (depends on conditions and may involve flying new sites). Assessing unknown flying sites and conditions. Theory of soaring flights, micrometeorology and terrain features.

Day 6: Soaring: 2-4 long flights of thermal or ridge soaring (depends on conditions and may involve flying new sites). Thermal ling technique, Cross-Country theory, micro and macro meteorology and weather forecasts.
Next steps are:

After the completion of the course you can fly independently from different flying sites and conditions but it's always better to look for advice from local and experienced pilots (they probably won't refuse buying them a beer in the pub in the evening or offering them a transport to the flying site.

Depending on your temper and free time you can continue paragliding with relaxing long altitude gliding or ridge soaring flights, acrobatics or the eternal cross-country flying.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What is Paragliding?
A. Paragliding is a form of unpowered flying and uses the same principles as gliders (sailplanes) and hanggliders. The engine here is the gravity, which makes all of them descend (less than 1.5 m/s) through the air but also flying ahead (with more than 60 km/h). In still air a 1000 meter descent/gliding with a paraglider results in 9 km flight.

Q2. How Paraglider can fly in the sky?
A. The miracle is the SUN. Because of the energy it contributes to the earth's surface and because of the wind's energy (which is also result of the Sun's activity). In the real atmosphere, during our gliding (and descending) flight, we meet surprisingly often and surprisingly many areas of lifting air. When this air is rising faster than the glider's descending rate we can gain height of hundreds and even thousands of meters, this can extend the duration of our flight (6-7 hours and more) and aids cross-country flights of several hundred kilometers. Just like birds -without a drop of fuel and engine noise - only because of the free Sun energy!

Q3. What is a Paraglider?
A. A Paraglider is actually the wing that gives us the freedom of unpowered flying. It consists of ram-air, aerofoil canopy and many lines (strong thin ropes/cords) and risers on which the pilot is suspended in his comfortable harness. The first paragliders were developed from parachutes and looked like a modern, steerable, skydiving canopy. Thus came the name paraglider (a gliding parachute), paragliding (gliding/flying with parachute). The shape, profile and characteristics of modern paragliders change and develop but will always use the same aerodynamics' principles as the wing of any airplane.

Q4. What are the main components of a Paraglider and how does it fly?
A. The canopy consists of two surfaces, connected with ribs, which divide it into 40-70 cells. There are openings at the leading edge, while the trailing edge of the canopy is closed. During the flight, part of the passing air fills and maintains a pressure in the cells (thus maintaining the wing-like shape of the canopy), while most of the air passes around both surfaces creating lift force. Because of this lift force we descend gently -not fall like a stone.

Q5. How does a Paraglider launch?
A. Unlike the parachutes where you jump from an airplane or high object (rock, bridge, building - BASE jumping), you inflate and launch a paraglider whilst on your feet - after few steps running against the wind and down a hill (mountain) or towed by a winch or vehicle in flatlands.

Q6. How do you control and land a paraglider?

A. Two "brake" lines/cords are controlling each half of the trailing edge of the wing. Pulling one of them deforms the same half of the trailing edge, creates drag and makes the wing turn the same direction. When landing we pull both brakes which reduces the speed of the paraglider, this converts most of its kinetic energy into potential (slower descent) and we land as soft as standing up from a chair.

Q7. What is the difference between a Hangglider and a Paraglider?
A. A Hangglider has a rigid frame maintaining the shape of the wing, with the pilot usually flying in a prone position. The Paraglider canopy shape is maintained only by air pressure and the pilot is suspended in a sitting or supine position. Paragliders folds down fast (5 minutes) into a package the size of a large rucksack and can be carried easily (10-15 kg). Conversely, a Hangglider is bigger (3-6 meters), heavier (30-50 kg) and needs a vehicle with a roof rack for transportation to and from the flying site, as well as appreciable time to set-up and strip-down (20-30 minutes). Despite some advantages of hanggliders (faster air speed, better turbulence resistance, higher gliding ratio), it's also somewhat
easier to launch, land and learn to fly a Paraglider.

Q8. Is Paragliding Safe?

A. With proper training and equipment, paragliding is one of the safest forms of personal flying. But like any other adventure sport, paragliding has its associated risks. In order to practice it safely everyone must strive at all times to minimize those risks. The most important prerequisites to learning to fly safely are: pilot attitude, competent instruction, and safe equipment. If these conditions are met, the slow speeds and inherent stability of paragliders can provide a safe and easy way to fly.

Q9. Can I teach myself Paragliding?
A. Paragliders are the most simple of aircraft. Most people can learn to launch, turn, and land in about an hour and a half of instruction. This is partly possible because we control the situation, assess the conditions and make safety decisions for our students. What cannot be taught in this period of time, however, are all the things necessary to make flight
decisions on your own. In order to do this safely, it is necessary to have a comprehensive knowledge of aerodynamics, weather, equipment and safety procedures and most importantly anti-collision rules and air law. The pilot training program encompasses these things and is the fastest and safest possible way to learn Paragliding, while initial self-teaching needs much more time and is the main reason for most accidents.

Q10. How much does a Paraglider cost?
A. This varies between manufacturers, models, and mainly the countries it is sold. New paraglider cost from 1500 to 3000. Don't forget that you also need a harness (4-600), a reserve parachute and a (4-600) helmet (100). Gloves, flying suit, good boots, sunglasses, variometer, GPS, radio, etc. are not obligatory but make flying more comfortable. The second hand equipment is much cheaper but an experienced pilot should choose it.

Q11. How long does a Paraglider last?

A. General wear and tear (especially the latter) and deterioration from exposure to ultra-violet light, usually limits the useful lifetime of a canopy to somewhere in the region of 4-6 years. This obviously depends strongly on how much use and the exposure to UV light.
